Seeking help for = residents=20 of Louisiana=20 after=20 the devastation of Hurricane Katrina =96=20 While the=20 rebuilding work continues across = the Gulf=20 Coast, = hundreds=20 of thousands of people are living, along the = coast in=20 travel trailers and other sub-standard temporary = housing=20 which is extremely vulnerable to storms =96 even = those=20 with tropical storm force winds. This is=20 especially true in Louisiana. In=20 the event of a storm, evacuees would be expected = to seek=20 shelter in numbers that exceed the capabilities = of Red=20 Cross units in that state. In response to = this=20 probability, and at the request of the Federal=20 Government, the American Red Cross is seeking to = establish a dedicated reserve of 5,000-7,000 = trained and=20 registered volunteers, pre-organized into teams = and=20 ready to mobilize via chartered aircraft. = The=20 teams would commit to exclusive availability=20 for Louisiana=20 shelters=20 during this hurricane season. =

YOU=20 Can=20 Help =96=20 Last summer=20 and fall we were all moved by the terrible = devastation=20 of Katrina. Many people stepped forward to = train=20 and assist in disaster relief. Whether or = not you=20 participated in training last summer we hope = that you=20 will to help now. Your willingness to = train and be=20 =93on-call=94 for Louisiana=20 sheltering=20 is vital to Red Cross response=20 capability.

Requirements=20 =96 If = you are=20 interested in becoming a Shelter Team volunteer, = you=20 must:

=B7 =20 Be = at least=20 18 years of age.

=B7 =20 Be = able to=20 travel within 24 hours of=20 notification.

=B7 =20 Commit to a=20 minimum two week deployment.

=B7 =20 Pass a=20 background check.

=B7 =20 Be = in good=20 physical condition.

=B7 =20 Be = able to=20 lift 50 pounds.

=B7 =20 Attend a 5=20 hour shelter operations and pre-deployment=20 training.

We=20 Need You to Register =96 = If = you meet=20 and agree to the above conditions, take the next = step in=20 the volunteer registration process by emailing = massbaydisaster@usa.redcross.org=20 the following information:

However, it is important to = remember=20 that you have helped in a significant way simply = by=20 agreeing to serve and keeping the Red Cross=92 = response=20 capability strong.
