United We Stand for Public Health
Principles
- A strong public health system protects and improves the well being of all Massachusetts communities, including children, families, and elders. Public health prevents injury and illness, contains the spread of infectious disease, and protects us from toxins in our water, food, and environment. Undermining public health threatens all of us and is unacceptable.
- The state’s public health funding cuts are shortsighted and fiscally imprudent. Disease and injury prevention programs save far more in medical expenses than they cost. In this time of unprecedented vulnerability, we should be investing more in public health, not less.
- Policy makers should expand revenues and close corporate tax loopholes to protect public health and to correct structural budget deficits resulting from years of tax cuts.
- Massachusetts needs to develop a comprehensive, evidence-based public health strategy focused on health promotion and disease prevention, leading to verifiable improvements in the health status of the entire population. The Massachusetts comprehensive public health strategy should be derived from a prioritization of needs and a prudent allocation of resources.
- We must maximize use of federal dollars available to help Massachusetts residents and not cut programs that include federal matches.
