Massachusetts Public Health Association (MPHA)

What is MPHA?

Working for a Healthy Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Public Health Association is a statewide membership organization of people working to protect the health and safety of all our Commonwealth’s residents.

MPHA is working for a healthy Massachusetts by promoting laws, policies, and programs that protect the health of our families, communities, and workplaces.
Our focus is on preventing disease and injury.

We believe that everyone has a right to both public health and health care, particularly those vulnerable to disparities in health status because of race, ethnicity, class, gender, or sexual orientation.

Our recent accomplishments include:

  • Helping boost the Department of Public Health’s Fiscal Year 2007 budget to $513.56 million, an increase of more than $78 million compared to FY06.
  • Winning passage of legislation to prevent mercury pollution, as part of the Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow
  • Helping win passage of legislation to prevent AIDS and hepatitis C by legalizing the sale of clean needles to adults
  • Preventing childhood obesity by helping pass strong school nutrition policies in Boston and other communities

MPHA has offices in Boston, Worcester, and Springfield. We have a growing membership of individuals and organizations in regions across the state. MPHA’s Regional Committees and Sections provide a strong combination of grassroots strength and technical expertise. MPHA’s successes bring together the power of our members with community organizing, coalition building, public education, and advocacy.

Founded in 1879, MPHA is the oldest public health organization in the nation, and
a leading affiliate of the American Public Health Association.
