MPHA Issue Priority

Health Care Access

There are widely varying estimates of the number of people without health insurance in Massachusetts – 618,000 according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 372,000 according to the state – but either figure is alarming. In addition, there are many more people who are underinsured or not receiving proper care because of their race, ethnicity, gender, class, or sexual orientation.

MPHA believes that health care is a universal human right and has long been involved in efforts to extend access, eliminate health disparities, and establish universal health care. MPHA was a member of the coalition that passed the 2006 health reform legislation to expand access, and is currently a member of the ACTII coalition that is monitoring its implementation. MPHA also remains a committed supporter of the state Constitutional Amendment establishing healthcare as a right, and has consistently endorsed the MassCare coalition’s single-payer universal health care proposal.
